Riverina Merino Stud Boonoke at Deniliquin has scooped the 2004 Sydney Royal Show prize pool with around twenty-five Champion, Grand Champion, First Prize and Most Successful Exhibit wins across the medium and strong wool categories. Stud Manager Jim Coward, Classer Forbes Murdoch and the Boonoke team took home many of the prestigious awards including the Most Successful Exhibitor in Medium and Strong Merino and Poll Merino Classes, Most Successful August Shorn Merino Sheep Exhibitor, and three Grand Champion Awards including Medium Wool Merino Ram, Strong Wool Merino Ram, and Strong Wool Merino Ewe. There were five Champion awards including Medium Wool August Shorn Merino Ram, Medium Wool August Shorn Merino Ewe, Strong Wool August Shorn Merino Ram, and Strong Wool August Shorn Merino Ewe. Boonoke Stud also won five Reserve Grand Champion awards and five first prize awards at the Easter event. Other Riverina Merino Studs were well represented in the Sydney Royal Show prize pool. Uardry Stud won Champion Fine Medium August Shorn Merino Ewe, Willandra Stud won Grand Champion Poll Merino Ewe, and Goolgumbla Stud won Champion March Shorn Strong Wool Ram, Reserve Champion August Shorn Strong Wool Ram, and Reserve Grand Champion Strong Wool Ram. Wanganella Stud won the Champion Medium Wool March Shorn Merino Ram, Reserve Grand Champion Medium Wool Merino Ram, and first prize for Medium Wool Ram March Shorn. Riverina Merino President David Taylor praised the Riverina Merino group’s performance at the Royal Show. For commercial wool-growers and industry personnel interested in the genetics of sheep breeding, he also encouraged attendance at the groups September Ram Preview Open Day to be held this year at the Narrandera Race Club. “Visitors to the 2004 Riverina Merino Ram Preview will be able to see thirty studs’ finest breeding stock and learn first hand why there is real money in the Riverina Merino and its winning trifecta traits of fibre, frame and fertility,” David said from his Pooginook Merino stud. “In addition to being champions in the show ring, the Riverina Merino sheep offer a long history of wool cutters, meat producers and big-framed replacement ewes with a strong fertility record”. Winning broad ribbons in Shows incorporating Stud Breeders from all areas and generating top prices in multi bloodline commercial sales are powerful indicators of the breeding superiority of the Riverina Stud Merino sheep. The September One Day – One Stop Ram Preview is your chance to inspect and reflect on the might of the Riverina Merino as demonstrated by the 30 displaying Riverina Studs at one central location.
